Solar FAQs
Straight answers on subsidy, net metering, sizing, cost and maintenance.
Cost, savings and payback
How much can I save with rooftop solar?
Units your plant generates and you use are units you do not buy from BESCOM. The saving depends on your consumption, system size, shade and tariff. Use the SunScore calculator for an estimate and a site survey for a firm figure.
What is the payback period?
Payback is the installed cost divided by the yearly saving. It varies widely with consumption, subsidy and cost. A good proposal shows the calculation and its assumptions so you can check it.
Do solar savings include the fixed charge?
No. Fixed charges and taxes on your bill remain, so solar reduces the energy portion rather than the whole bill.
Is solar worth it for a small bill?
A very low bill means a small system and a long payback. A survey and the calculator will show whether it makes sense for you.
What affects the price of a system?
Module type (DCR or non-DCR), inverter make, structure design, roof type, cable lengths, the metering route and the size. Compare quotations on the equipment list, not only on the total.
Subsidy and approvals
What is the PM Surya Ghar subsidy for homes?
₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the third kW, with a maximum of ₹78,000 for 3 kW and above. Check pmsuryaghar.gov.in for the latest.
Do apartments get a subsidy?
Housing societies and RWAs receive ₹18,000 per kW for common-facility solar, up to 500 kW, calculated at 3 kW per house and including residents' individual rooftop plants.
Is there a subsidy for businesses?
Not under PM Surya Ghar. Businesses benefit from bill savings, tax depreciation and the export tariff.
Where do I apply for BESCOM net metering?
On BESCOM's solar rooftop portal, srtpv.bescom.org. For subsidy cases register on pmsuryaghar.gov.in first.
What does BESCOM pay for surplus units?
Under the KERC order of 25 August 2026: ₹3.89 per unit for a home system without subsidy; ₹1.96, ₹2.14 or ₹2.58 for subsidised home systems up to 2 kW, up to 3 kW and above 3 kW; ₹3.11 (DCR) or ₹2.34 (non-DCR) for other plants from 1 to 1,000 kW. Each is fixed for a 25-year agreement.
What is DCR?
Domestic Content Requirement. It means the modules use cells made in India. The PM Surya Ghar subsidy needs DCR modules.
What is ALMM?
The Approved List of Models and Manufacturers for solar modules. MNRE has allowed net-metering projects to commission with an exemption from List-II (solar cells) until 31 December 2026.
Who is my electricity company?
Check your bill. BESCOM serves Bengaluru and several nearby districts. Other parts of Karnataka are served by CESC, MESCOM, HESCOM and GESCOM, each with its own process.
Technical
How many units does 1 kW produce in Bengaluru?
Roughly 4 to 4.5 units a day, or about 120 to 135 units a month, before shade and orientation effects.
How much roof area do I need?
Around 80 to 100 sq ft of shadow-free flat roof per kW.
What is the difference between on-grid, hybrid and off-grid?
On-grid connects to the grid and uses net metering, with no battery. Hybrid adds a battery for backup and stays grid-connected. Off-grid has no grid connection. See our comparison.
Will my solar system work during a power cut?
A standard on-grid system switches off during a grid outage for safety. A hybrid system with a battery can power selected loads.
Does solar work on cloudy days?
Yes, at lower output. Over a year, your plant's total generation is what matters.
What happens on the roof when it rains or storms?
Structures are designed for wind load and modules are built to withstand weather. Earthing and surge protection add safety. Ask for the design basis in your quotation.
Can I add more panels later?
Possibly, if the inverter capacity, roof area, sanctioned load and approvals allow. Mention future plans at the design stage.
How long do panels last?
Modules typically carry long performance warranties and last decades, with output declining gradually. Check the datasheet for the exact terms.
What maintenance is needed?
Periodic cleaning, an annual inspection and monitoring the generation. See our maintenance guide.
Apartments and businesses
Can a society use solar for lifts and pumps?
Yes. Common-area loads such as lifts, pumps, STP, lighting and EV charging are the usual targets.
What is virtual net metering?
A KERC-approved arrangement that lets energy from one plant be shared across the meters of different consumers in the same distribution area. See our guide.
What tax benefit do businesses get?
Depreciation at 40% on the written down value for solar plants. Eligibility depends on your tax regime and commissioning date, so speak to your chartered accountant.
What is the largest rooftop plant I can net meter?
Under the KERC order of 25 August 2026, net metering applies from 1 kW up to 1,000 kW, limited by sanctioned load or contract demand.
Do you do ground-mount projects?
Yes. Yes. We start with a feasibility study. See ground-mount solar.
Working with Agriya
Who is Agriya Green Power?
Agriya Green Power Pvt Ltd is a solar EPC company in Bengaluru, operating since 2014. We are a distributor for AMAZE India and a channel partner for V-GUARD, and we install under our GLOSUN® brand.
What is the site survey and is it free?
An engineer visits to check roof area, shade, direction, structure, your distribution board, earthing and sanctioned load. Book it through the quote form.
How do I get a firm quotation?
After the site survey you receive a quotation with the design, equipment list, price, subsidy and metering plan.
Are you a registered vendor for the PM Surya Ghar subsidy?
Yes. Agriya Green Power is a registered vendor on the PM Surya Ghar national portal, so we can install your system under the subsidy scheme and guide you through the process.
What is SunScore?
Our free online estimate of the right system size, savings, subsidy and payback for your roof and bill. A survey then confirms it.
How do I contact you?
